Satellite
Well I somehow managed to squeeze in an illustration for Illustration Friday this week. The current topic is “Satellite” and as I have always loved the idea of old Sputnik bleeping its way around the earth I thought I’d would base my illo on that. Initially I wanted to include some kind of character and came up with the girl with the receiver headphones but I wasn’t really happy with the piece until I tried removing the character altogether.
I’d be interested to know if anybody prefers the image with the character though…

I love the texture you have created in the background and the lights in the buildings. I think it works best without the fugure too.

Hi there, I love you illustration, great texture…I too prefer the image without the character although she is very cool!

I love them both! The first one flies over the Soviet sky in 1957, and the second is the same place but years later. At least that’s the vibe I get. I love the colors, very soviet tones setting the background for Sputnik’s flight. Awesome work!

This is lovely! I adore it. Ditto what they said about the figure, works great without.

Yep, my favorite is the lone character in the window… it says a lot more to me. Nice texture work.

I prefer it without the character too - but you’ll definitely have to keep her for something else.
In this one, maybe a few more silhouettes of people on top of the buildings might be cool? Might make it a bit less static — just a thought!
Great illo though - I love the texture in this.

like it without, more of a sense of alienation and satellite, as in an echo or repeat of something. great buildings and colour, like the warm, rich feel even though it is all quite lonely in space and time.

Thank you all for the positive feedback, I think that removing the character was definitely the way to go. It’s always great to hear other peoples take on your work and your comments have really helped to make my first Illustration Friday submission a very positive experience indeed. Nice one guys!
